PLANS FOR 2016

2015 is drawing to a close. We are forming plans to make Thomson Chess Club even more vibrant. Here's some of the plans:

THOMSON CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 31 JANUARY  2016

I propose the following changes to the Club Championship as a testbed for more of such activities to be organised at the National level if we succeed.

1  Rapid with increment

The time control of 25 minutes will be adjusted to 22 minutes with 5 second increment. For a game of average 50 moves, that takes 26 minutes approximating the usual 25 0. This will be a 7 round event starting 9am.

2  New Veterans Section

This category is introduced to allow older players who have not been playing to come out of "retirement" against fellow adults aged 40 and above. With more practice they should be able to hold their own against the younger players.

THOMSON CLUB LEAGUE

The new league will start 1st Friday of January 2016. This will commence on 745pm sharp with no zero start. The time control is 1 hr per side with no increment. Our aim is to provide opportunities for slower games to be played and enjoyed. This league will continue till end March. Players may be paired based on who is present, those who have played each other will alternate colours. Scores will be accumulated and the player with the highest score at the end of the league will get a prize.

SIMULTANEOUS MATCH

We are arranging a simultaneous match 15 January 7.30pm. On this day there will not be the league, all players are encouraged to take part in the Simul. IM Tin JingYao has agreed to be the Master for this.

Please email me at johnwongfk63@gmail.com with the heading "Simul" if you wish to play. Places on first-come-first-served basis. Members only are entitled to play of course subject to availability. No more than 20 players and no additions after early exits. Players rated 2000 and under only please.

THOMSON CHESS FIESTA MAY 28-29

The Fiesta will continue on May 28-29. We are retaining the time control of 25 min with 5 sec increment for the Cup Rapid. The Challengers will still be 25 0.

Other forms like Blitz and Rapid (<25min per side) will still continue. No transfer chess or laser chess at the club please. There is something for everyone at the Club if you are here to play. Those wanting to join the Club please register early by signing up as members of the club come January 2016. Please indicate if you are taking part in the Club Championship on the form which will be out at the Thomson CC from 3 January 2016.

Happy 2016!

THOMSON CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2015

72 entries were received, some past closing date which did cause some hiccups during the first round pairings. We apologise for the delay. Fortunately it did not cause major changes in the schedule to follow.

We had 33 entries in the Juniors, of which 12 of my students took part. Isaiah came in 2nd with 5.5/7, followed by Qi Xuan in 5th place and I Shiang on 8th. Top 10 places were awarded books as prizes, with the 1st 3 winners getting 2 books each.

Alexander Chan (above left) managed to fend off challenges from the likes of Cyrus Nisban and Royce Tan to emerge the winner of the Seniors with 6 pts, conceding only 2 draws to Lee I-Shiuan and Limono Handjojo. Cheong Sue Lyn managed 4 pts this time on 17th place in a pool of 36 players. Overall, a satisfying tournament with good enthusiastic players wanting to play chess.

HAPPY 2015 FROM THOMSON CHESS CLUB!

Happy 2015 to all chessplayers! This is the new Thomson Chess Club blog site and all news and results regarding the Club activities shall now be posted here.

Tonight is our first session for 2015 and this is our 10th anniversary this year. How time flies! So we will be doing a couple more events in 2015 to commemorate the Club's founding and the first shall be the Thomson Club Championship. All you need to do to play in this is SIGN UP as a member. No entry fees. Plus you get to win some prizes ( I have a sponsor ready) so for this year prize winners get NEW books rather than used ones.

We hope all who are interested in playing chess over the board can come and see for themselves the conditions they can play chess in, We will try to maintain a decent volume this year so no complaints of noise should arise.

THE CLUB SHALL BE CLOSED IN MAY AND OCTOBER for there will be poor attendance expected due to the exam period, unless there is enough interest amongst the adults to come and play.

Thomson Chess Club is located on 194 Upper Thomson Road, Thomson Community Club 3rd floor. It's the classroom just ahead of the lift entrance. Parking is available at Shunfu Block 309-312 carpark and you can cross the linkbridge to the CC. We start 730pm and end 10pm Fridays.

See you soon !
