An incident happened at the Club last night. 2 girls who played with a teenager were called names and labelled repeatedly during the session. The Club welcomes players of all levels so long as one knows the rules of the game. It is a place for many to play and learn so they can improve. If you find that your opponent is not playing to your level, it is fine to stop further games nicely and introduce them to someone else who may suit them better.  No one has the right to single out weaker players for we were once weak players too.  Humility is what we learn from the game of chess - everyone has the right to play.  If you cannot bring yourself to accept that I would recommend that you stay home and play online.  Please.

 The Final Standings are : Senior standings   Junior Standings  The Prize winners with their prizes The Junior Champ Nathan Jaylene 3rd Guangming 2nd  The Senior Champ Arlan so I gave him the prize Darren 2nd  Jireh 3rd Benson finished 4th    All players had a good time over the last 3 Thursdays, with some takeaways on how not to lose winning games in the Junior section. There were many upsets which won games were lost due to a missed back rank mate. Some need to learn the Laws of Chess (understandably, it being their first tournament). With the prizes we hope to inspire more to read about chess and learn from the books. It is by far the most useful way (as reading makes you ponder).  Thanks again to Arlan and Ryan for assisting throughout the tournament!

This was the scene at our first Thomson Chess Club Rapid. Thankfully we had 19 players which gave the opportunity to split the Rapid to 2 sections, the Seniors at afar and the Juniors. The Seniors included Arlan Cabe (also our co-organiser) engaging in a fierce battle with Benson, with the others which included 2 teenagers (both very keen on chess improvement). The Rapid will continue for 2 more weeks till April 23 where books are often to the top four in each section. Our kiddos at work here, finishing ahead of the seniors (as usual) just before 8.30pm. They need to draw inspiration from our Seniors in taking their time to make better moves. There were 3 in the group which managed to do so and they won all their games.   Based on the feedback gathered, more formats will be introduced in coming weeks after this event.  Remember to register for the April 30 session at the previous post in the blog!

 Only 1 signed up so far at Thomson Chess Club for Feb 19. We close for today. 

 We had a good turnout of 24 players who dropped by at the Club opening last night. It was a good mix of players from total beginners to a National Master. Casual games plus some blitz going on. Besides 5 players who were from Tanglin, others were unknown faces which is a good sign of things to come.  Here at Thomson we promote interaction between players and keep the mood cordial, so players do not feel too tense as in chess tournaments.  I commend my fellow volunteers Arlan Cabe and Ryan Low for stepping forward to help man the sessions going forward. We do not hold any keys but they shall inform the Constituency Office staff to open the cabinets for the equipment at Classroom 3. The room can sit 16 players comfortably, maximum 20 if we cram it.   So do register for the sessions if you wish to secure a place to play. Register using Google Sheet    

 Welcome to the new Thomson CC Chess Club coming back after a long hiatus!  We are now located at Classroom 3 on level 3 of the new Thomson CC, thanks again to the Thomson CCMC for allowing us the use of the premises to continue our chess activities. All equipment (sets and clocks) are provided for so there is no need to bring yours.  As you can see, the room can only fit 20-22 players max so there is little room for parents and accompanying persons to wait inside the room. Hence its best that parents and accompanying persons drop their kids off and come pick them up later. There are spaces within the CC to sit and wait around. REGISTRATION FOR SESSION Registering to attend the weekly Thursday sessions unfortunately is necessary to ensure enough room for players to play and avoid overcrowding.
